Subject: 6.1 National External Diploma Program Graduate Sherman Thompson - Dr. Rosa Atkins
Strategic Plans:
File Attachment:
Summary: In December 2018, Sherman Thompson completed requirements to earn his high school diploma from Charlottesville City Schools. In 2014, Sherman began working towards this goal by entering a brand new adult education program at CCS-- the National External Diploma Program, a standardized applied performance assessment program requiring 100 percent mastery of high school level competencies in 12 subject areas including language arts, math, statistics, technology, fine arts, social studies and science.

Sherman was instrumental in bringing this program to CCS. He wrote a compelling letter to (me) Dr. Atkins explaining his extraordinary efforts over many years in working towards the GED, passing 4 of the 5 tests and then coming 10 points short on his final test before the GED 2014 test was released, meaning he would have to start all over again. Sherman was devastated—he had been working towards his GED since the 1970’s. (He was drafted into the military before completing traditional high school). He convinced (me) Dr. Atkins that we needed to offer the adult diploma program as an option for our adult learners.

TJACE’s Lisa Climer became Sherman’s NEDP assessor and witnessed firsthand his very sharp mind and unmatched determination at bi-weekly in-office checks over the past 2 ½ years. And, for a time, Sherman worked with a tutor from Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle

Mostly, this is a CCS family success story. Sherman has long worked as a custodian at Johnson, and Jillian Smith has been an angel for him—serving as advocate, tutor and cheerleader. She also secured a retired Johnson teacher, Ms. Zollinhofer (and her husband), to tutor him.

Sherman’s perseverance is remarkable and a shining light for us all. Despite many obstacles and struggles, he never gave up on his dream of earning a high school diploma.
